Movement in CS2 can decide a fight before the first bullet lands. A player who knows how to counter-strafe, peek, and use momentum will win duels against someone with better aim but worse mechanics. This guide covers the three techniques that matter most.
Counter-Strafing: Stop Before You Shoot
When you move in CS2, your accuracy drops significantly. To shoot accurately, you need to be nearly stationary. Counter-strafing is how you stop almost instantly.
The technique works like this:
- Strafe left (hold A) to move
- Release A and immediately tap D to cancel your momentum
- Fire the moment you feel the stop
- Repeat on the other side
Use [c]cl_showpos 1[/c] in the console to watch your velocity. Shoot when it hits zero.
Peeking: Three Ways to Take an Angle
How you peek an angle determines whether you win or lose the fight. There are three basic types:
- Basic peek: Move out to check the angle, then stop instantly by pressing the opposite key. This keeps your accuracy for the shot.
- Crouch peek: Crouch as you peek. This moves your hitbox lower and makes headshots harder for the enemy. Most effective when peeking from left to right.
- Shoulder peek: Show only your arm or shoulder to bait a shot from an AWP player. When they fire, you have a window to counter-attack.
Bunny Hopping and Strafe Jumping
Bunny hopping means jumping repeatedly while strafing in the air to maintain momentum. It makes you a harder target and lets you cross open ground faster.
Strafe jumping is the foundation: jump, let go of the forward key, then synchronize your mouse movements with your strafe keys. This preserves speed that you would normally lose.
Both techniques take practice. Start in a private server or deathmatch before trying them in competitive matches.
Practice Routine
Spend five to ten minutes a day on movement drills. Load a practice map, strafe left and right, counter-strafe, and fire at a wall to see where your bullets land. Watch your velocity indicator and learn what zero feels like. Short daily sessions build muscle memory fast.
Movement will not fix bad crosshair placement, but it will make every other part of your gameplay better. Players who move well take fewer unnecessary fights and win more of the fights they choose.
