If Counter-Strike 2 crashes on launch or drops you from a match with a cooldown, Trusted Mode is often the reason. Valve's support documentation explains how it works and what to do about it.
What Trusted Mode does
Trusted Mode is enabled by default for all CS2 players. It blocks third-party software from injecting into the game process. Some everyday applications inject into games on purpose or by accident, and Trusted Mode rejects all of it. There is no whitelist. Valve's position is that even benign software can be a vector for cheats that hijack it, so everything foreign gets blocked.
Why it crashes
According to Valve, earlier versions of Trusted Mode refused injections in ways that could violate the expectations of the software being injected, and the crash happened inside CS2 as a result. If you start incompatible software after the game is already running in Trusted Mode, you can get disconnected from your match. The cooldown you receive for that cannot be removed from your account, same as other Competitive cooldowns.
The fix
If you need to run software that Trusted Mode blocks, add the launch option
Code: Select all
-allow_third_party_softwareBefore you change anything
Work through the standard checks first. Verify the integrity of your game files through Steam: right-click CS2 in your Library, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files. Steam says some files failing to verify is normal for most games, usually local config files, and can be safely ignored. Do not run verification while defragmenting or scanning for viruses, and not for multiple games at once.
If the crash started right after you installed an overlay, a capture tool, or any app that hooks into games, that app is the more likely suspect. Close it and test again before touching launch options.
