CS2 bomb mechanics: the 40-second timer, plant and defuse times, and what the kit changes
Every competitive round in Counter-Strike 2 comes down to one question: can the Terrorists get the C4 down and keep it there, or can the Counter-Terrorists stop the plant or beat the defuse. The timers below decide more rounds than aim does, so it pays to know them exactly.
The round clock
Competitive and Premier both run a 1:55 round timer. If it hits zero before the C4 is planted, the Counter-Terrorists win the round without firing a shot. [1] Matches are MR12: first to 13 rounds, sides swap after 12, and a 12-12 tie goes to overtime where each side starts with $10,000 and plays three rounds per side. [1]
Planting
The C4 spawns with one random Terrorist each round and can only be planted inside one of the two bomb sites on the map. [1] The plant itself takes 3 seconds and has to be uninterrupted inside the site boundaries. [3] Plant early and the defenders face the full 40-second countdown. Plant late and they may not have time to defuse even with a kit.
The 40-second timer
Once planted, the bomb detonates 40 seconds later. That is down from 45 seconds in Counter-Strike 1.6 and Counter-Strike: Source, which is why old habits from those games can lose you rounds in CS2. [1] If every Terrorist dies after the plant, the round does not end. It runs until the bomb is defused or it explodes. [1]
Defusing
Any Counter-Terrorist can defuse. Walk up to the bomb, face it from close range, and hold the Use key (E by default) until the bar fills. [2] The base defuse takes 10 seconds. A defuse kit, which costs $400 in the buy menu, cuts that to 5 seconds. [1][2] Stop moving, get shot, or walk away and the defuse cancels and you start over. [2]
You are not helpless while defusing. You can reload, crouch, switch fire modes, and even throw grenades underhand without canceling the defuse. [1] That is why you sometimes see a player pop a smoke mid-defuse in a pro match.
Why the kit matters
Five seconds sounds like a small saving, but it is the difference between a defuse that must start with 6 seconds left and one that must start with 11. Teams usually buy at least one kit on full buy rounds, and on eco rounds a single $400 kit can be the cheapest round win you will ever buy. [2]
The money angle
A defuse win pays the Counter-Terrorists $3,500, the same as the $3,500 the Terrorists get for a round won by explosion. A normal round win pays $3,250. [1] Defusing is not just the safe play. It is the best-paying win condition in the mode.
