CS2 jump throw bind: the commands, the timing window that replaced them, and when one still helps

Post by ice »

Quick summary
  • A jump throw releases a grenade at the top of a jump so the arc matches a lineup you have practised.
  • The bind is three lines: two aliases that fire +jump and -attack together, and one key bind that points at them.
  • CS2 performs jump throws inside a timing window with no bind at all, so the bind is now a preference rather than a requirement.
  • A bind is still worth having if you want the same release every time without timing the window.
  • Put the bind in your autoexec so it loads on every launch, or you type it again each session.
Why the throw needs help in the first place

Smoke and molotov lineups are built on a fixed release point. You line up on a pixel, start running, jump, and let go of the grenade at the same moment every time. The jump and the release have to happen together, and by hand the release drifts by a frame or two.

The commands
  • alias "+jumpthrow" "+jump;-attack"
  • alias "-jumpthrow" "-jump"
  • bind "f" "+jumpthrow"
The first line makes +jumpthrow run two commands at once. +jump starts the jump and -attack stops the attack input so the grenade releases. The second line releases the jump key, which you need or you cannot jump again. The third line points a key at the whole thing.

Hold the left mouse button first to pull the pin, then press the key. Swap "f" for any key that is not already in use.

The timing window Valve added

PCGamesN reports that Valve changed jump throws so they can be performed within a certain window, which removed the need for a bind. The outlet also notes that players like Jonathan "Elige" Jablonowski, who plays CSGO for Complexity, find the new system more complicated than what it replaced.

That is why the bind is optional in CS2. Use it for consistency. Leave it out if you would rather keep the key.

Why a bind does nothing when you first set it
  • The key is already bound to something else, and the later bind wins.
  • The bind sits in a config you never exec, so it is not loaded in this session.
  • You pressed the key before pulling the pin, so there was nothing to release.
  • The file is saved under the wrong name or in the wrong folder.
The fix for most of these is to put the three lines in your autoexec and start the game again, which is what the Total CS guide recommends.

FAQ

Q: Does the bind work for every grenade?
A: It releases the grenade you are holding, and it is only for grenades.

Q: Can I bind it to a mouse button?
A: Yes. Replace "f" with the button name you want.

Q: Do I still need a bind in CS2?
A: No. CS2 performs jump throws inside a timing window, so the bind is a convenience rather than a requirement.

Q: Why does my smoke land somewhere else every time?
A: The run-up is usually the problem. The bind fixes the jump and the release, not the position you start from.
