Counter-Strike 2 changed what happens when the bomb goes off. Season 5, which Valve announced on July 8 2026, reworked bomb damage completely, and Valve's update notes since then have not changed it again.
What changed
The detonation now sends an explosive wave out from the bombsite and through the map, instead of a single blast at the site.
Valve's own description of the change is short. If you are too close to the bomb when it explodes, you die. The shockwave dissipates around corners and does not travel through walls, so at a certain distance you can survive it with a route instead of a health pool. If you are not sure whether you will make it, your health bar flashes a preview of how well you will fare after the blast.
What that means in a round
The old habit was to stay out of the bombsite once the bomb was planted. The new rule rewards knowing the geometry. A corner between you and the bombsite can be enough, because the shockwave fades around it. A wall stops it outright.
The health bar preview is the practical part. When the bomb is planted and you are inside the blast radius, the bar flashes a preview of the damage you will take. If the preview says you will not survive, leave the site before the timer runs out rather than trying to defuse through the explosion.
What this does not change
The round timer, the 40 second bomb countdown, the 3 second plant and the 10 second defuse are all unchanged. The rework only covers the damage the explosion deals. In a round where the bomb is about to go off, the timers are still what decides whether you have time to get out.
