CS2 profile rank and the 2026 service medal: the 40 ranks, the reset, and how it differs from your CS Rating
Two numbers sit on a Counter-Strike profile and players mix them up. One is the Profile Rank, 40 steps of XP that you reset once a year. The other is the CS Rating, which Valve calls a measurement of performance. They are separate systems, and one does not feed the other.
The profile rank is XP, not skill
Valve's description of the system is short. Earn XP by playing in official game modes and rank up your profile. When you reach Global General (Rank 40), you get the option to reset your profile rank. Valve's 2026 medal post repeats the same wording almost exactly: "Reach Global General (Rank 40) to reset your Profile Rank and earn (or upgrade) your 2026 Service Medal."
So the loop is play official modes, gain XP, climb to rank 40, reset, and the medal moves up a year. Valve wrote "earn (or upgrade)" for a reason. A player who resets several times in a year upgrades the same medal rather than earning a new one.
The medal is a display item
Valve's 2023 announcement describes the medal as "an inspectable display item you can show off wherever your avatar is shown." That is the whole mechanical description Valve gives, and it is honest about what the medal is. Valve's pages do not describe it as a matchmaking input. If an account listing claims a medal changes your queue, that is the listing's claim, not Valve's.
How it differs from your CS Rating
Valve's CS2 page describes the CS Rating on its own terms: "Your CS Rating is a visible measurement of your Counter-Strike performance, and it will determine where you stand on global and regional leaderboards. To get your CS Rating, play matches in the updated Premier mode."
The two systems answer different questions. The profile rank and the medal track time and official-mode play. The CS Rating tracks competitive results in Premier. A high medal with no CS Rating means you have played a lot. It does not mean you have won a lot.
The 2026 medal
Valve posted the 2026 medal on December 26, 2025, with a start date of January 1, 2026. The post is one sentence long and does not list medal tiers, colours, or XP costs. The news index carries it under Counter-Strike 2, so it is a CS2 item and not a leftover CS:GO one.
What Valve does not publish
Valve does not publish the XP required for each rank, the exact reset window, or the medal appearance tiers on the pages cited here. Community trackers fill that gap and they disagree with each other on the numbers. Treat a tracker as a tracker, not as a spec.
