- The headline change. As of the October 14, 2026 update, round backup files no longer exist on your server unless you explicitly allow them at startup. The new launch flag is -allow_round_backup_files, passed to the server on the command line.
- What a round backup file is. It is a snapshot Valve writes when the match state is saved, so an interrupted match can be restored from that point rather than restarting the whole thing. The server needs to be told to write one at all, and that is what the flag now controls.
- What actually changed. Before this update the round backup files were produced under the game server's normal operation. Now they require -allow_round_backup_files in the launch parameters. A server that is not started with that flag will not create them.
- What did not change. The feature is still there. The flag does not enable backups that never existed; it gates the ones that already existed. If your community relied on restarts, the fix is to add the flag to your launch line, not to look for a new command.
- What it is not. This is not the same thing as the new Clan Tag setting for servers, and it is not the same thing as the Half Time scoreboard fix. Those are separate items in the same update.
The October 14, 2026 update note is short and reads like this, under MISC: "Round backup files now require the game server startup flag '-allow_round_backup_files'". That is the whole instruction. There is no cvar to flip in game, and no configuration file entry mentioned. The flag is passed at launch, which means it belongs in the same place you already put your -port, -tickrate and +map arguments.
The practical consequence for a server operator is straightforward: if your launch script has not been touched, your round backups stop being written. Nothing in the game tells you. You only find out when you go looking for a backup file that is not there.
Two more October 2026 items that sit in the same server config
These came through in the September 25 and October 14 updates and belong in the same conversation as the round backup flag, because they are all server-side switches an operator controls.
- sv_clantags_enabled. Added in the September 25, 2026 update so custom servers can disable clan tags. Clan tags themselves came in the September 22 update: a player who is a member of a Steam Community Group can set a Clan Tag from the Player Profile, and the tag then shows in places like the scoreboard and death notices. The September 25 note puts the server-side switch in front of it. If a community does not want tags in its matches, this is the switch.
- The radio command list. The October 14, 2026 update note says allowed radio commands "now have an explicit list". The radial menu that opens when you call a radio command was already covered on this board, so I am not re-explaining the three menus here. What changed is that the set of commands a player can use is now a defined list rather than something assembled on the fly, which is the kind of detail a server admin checks when a command stops working for no visible reason.
Valve's update page gives the flag name and nothing else. It does not document a default value, does not say whether the flag is inherited by child processes, and does not explain what happens if the flag is present but the match is interrupted. Those are gaps in the published notes, not things I can fill in from the page. If you need the behaviour of the flag in an edge case, the honest answer is that the update note does not cover it.
I also want to be clear that this post is not a claim about what a round backup file contains or how large it is. The update note does not describe the format. If you are on a private server and you need to know whether your backup workflow still works, test it: interrupt a match with the flag present and confirm the file appears where you expect it.
Where this sits in the update history
- October 14, 2026. Round backup files require -allow_round_backup_files. Also in this update: demo and replay viewer improvements, the AUG reload animation update to match the new reload duration, the explicit radio command list, a new workshop tools material, and Vulkan stability work.
- October 8, 2026. The defuse kit ping icon, the AUG reload time cut by half a second, and the Desert Eagle silent reload sound fix.
- September 25, 2026. sv_clantags_enabled arrives, along with Rush mode rules updates and a fix for when players are kicked for team damage.
- September 24, 2026. The Rush mode team damage kick rules are adjusted again, and two silent reload exploits are closed.
- September 23, 2026. Rush mode timing changes: the countdown after elimination goes from 7 to 14 seconds on end rooms and Convoy, and warmup, freeze time, and technical timeout are all reduced.
