CS2: how to show your FPS, server MS, and position in game with cl_showfps, cl_showpos, and cl_showtick

Post by ice »

Quick summary
CS2 can draw live numbers on your screen if you ask it to. Valve's own convar documentation lists cl_showfps as "Draw fps meter at top of screen (1 = fps, 2 = smooth fps, 3 = server MS, 4 = Show FPS and Log to file)", cl_showpos as "Draw current position at top of screen", and cl_showtick as "Show current tick/time values". cl_showloadout toggles the display of your current loadout. These are display commands, so they only change what you see.

cl_showfps and its four values
  • cl_showfps 1: frames per second.
  • cl_showfps 2: smooth fps, the averaged number.
  • cl_showfps 3: server MS.
  • cl_showfps 4: fps plus logging to a file.
The 3 value is the one people reach for when they want a server number on screen. Valve's text for it is "server MS".

cl_showpos
"Draw current position at top of screen." It puts your position on screen, which is handy when you are working on a lineup or a jump spot and want to know exactly where you are standing.

cl_showtick
"Show current tick/time values." It takes a bitmask:
  • 1 = render time
  • 2 = GameTime
  • 4 = time of predicted entities
  • 8 = offset of predicted entities
cl_showloadout
"Toggles display of current loadout." Useful when you want the loadout panel on screen while you test a buy.

Console helpers
  • cl_printfps: "Print information from cl_showfps."
  • cl_resetfps: "Reset information from cl_showfps."
  • cl_showframenumber: "Show current framenumber"
  • cl_showmem: "Draw approximate memory use at top of screen"
FAQ

Which command shows a server number?
cl_showfps 3. Valve's description for that value is "server MS".

Do these need a config file?
No. They are console commands, so you type them into the console or put them on a key.
