CS2 teammate overhead: the cl_teamid_overhead commands, the defaults, and what the current build changed

Post by ice »

Quick summary
CS2 draws a small marker over each teammate so you can tell a friendly from an enemy without checking the radar. Six client commands control it, four server commands can override it, and the meaning of the mode value differs between Valve's 2023 command list and the current build dump.

The client commands
  • Code: Select all

    cl_teamid_overhead_mode
sets what appears over a teammate's head. Valve's list gives it a default of 2 and the description "Always show team id over teammates. 1 = pips; 2 = pips, name, and equipment". The build dump gives the same command the description "Always show team id over teammates. 0 = off, 1 = pips; 2 = +name, 3 = +equipment". The two pages disagree on whether the name and the equipment arrive together or as separate steps.
  • Code: Select all

    cl_teamid_overhead_colors_show
shows the overhead id in teammate color. Default false.
  • Code: Select all

    cl_teamid_overhead_maxdist
is the max distance at which the overhead team id icons show. Default 6000.
  • Code: Select all

    cl_teamid_overhead_maxdist_spec
is the same limit for a spectator. Default 4000.
  • Code: Select all

    cl_teamid_overhead_fade_near_crosshair
appears in the build dump only. Its description is "The amount to fade teamid when near the crosshair. Range is 0.0-1.0. 0: off". Valve's list does not carry it.
  • Code: Select all

    cl_drawhud_force_teamid_overhead
forces the marker on or off when the HUD is disabled. Default 0, described as "0: default; 1: draw teamid even if hud disabled; -1: force no teamid".
The server commands
  • Code: Select all

    sv_teamid_overhead
turns the feature on or off server side. Default true, described as "Shows teamID over player's heads. 0 = off, 1 = on".
  • Code: Select all

    sv_teamid_overhead_always_prohibit
    determines whether

    Code: Select all

    cl_teamid_overhead_always
is prohibited. Default false. Neither page lists

    Code: Select all

    cl_teamid_overhead_always
as an entry of its own, so this post does not claim it exists.
  • Code: Select all

    sv_teamid_overhead_maxdist
overrides the client max distance when set above 0. Default 0.
  • Code: Select all

    sv_teamid_overhead_maxdist_spec
overrides the spectator max distance when set above 0. Default 0.
What changed between the two lists
Valve's page is a snapshot. It says it was retrieved from the October 2 2023 build, revision 8384867. The build dump names its build, 11162119, dated October 22 2026. Two differences matter for this family.
  • The mode value. Valve puts the name and the equipment together at mode 2. The dump splits them, with the name at 2 and the equipment at 3.
  • The fade command.

    Code: Select all

    cl_teamid_overhead_fade_near_crosshair
is in the dump and absent from Valve's list.
Neither list defines its flag column, so the flags are not explained here.

The existing topic on this board
The CS2 HUD and radar settings topic already on this board mentions

Code: Select all

cl_teamid_overhead_mode
in one sentence and follows Valve's 2023 wording. That sentence is not wrong, but it does not match the current build dump. This post covers the whole family instead.
