CS2 Flashbang Mechanics: How Blind Duration Works and What Affects It

The flashbang is one of the most powerful tools in Counter-Strike 2. It deals no damage, but a well-timed flash can win a round by blinding multiple enemies for several seconds. Understanding how the blinding effect works will help you use flashbangs more effectively and avoid getting caught by them.

How the Flash Effect Works

When a flashbang explodes, it releases a bright flash of light and a loud bang. Any player with a direct line of sight to the explosion gets blinded. The screen turns white, and the HUD gets obscured by the whiteness. The explosion also deafens players, replacing all sound with a high-pitched ringing.

The key factor is the angle between the explosion and the player's crosshair. The closer the explosion is to the center of your view, the longer the blinding effect lasts. Distance also matters, with effects diminishing as you move further from the explosion.

Blind Duration by Angle

The following table shows how long the blinding effect lasts based on the angle from the player's aim:
  • 0 to 53 degrees: 1.88 seconds of full blindness, 4.87 seconds total effect
  • 53 to 72 degrees: 0.45 seconds of full blindness, 3.4 seconds total effect
  • 72 to 101 degrees: 0.08 seconds of full blindness, 1.95 seconds total effect
  • 101 to 180 degrees: 0.08 seconds of full blindness, 0.95 seconds total effect
The maximum blinding effect happens when the explosion occurs right beside the player and within their view. The effect is not affected by monitor aspect ratio.

Carrying Flashbangs

In Competitive, Wingman, and Premier modes, you can carry two flashbangs at once. In Casual mode, you can only carry one. The absolute maximum number of grenades you can carry is four, so if you already have three other grenades plus a flashbang, you cannot acquire a second flashbang.

Using Flashbangs Effectively

A pop-flash is one of the most effective techniques. You throw the flashbang so it explodes instantly when an enemy sees it, giving them minimal reaction time. Bouncing flashbangs off walls or throwing them at precise angles helps achieve this.

When clearing corners and chokepoints, throw the flashbang around the corner or over the wall before entering. This forces opponents to look away or get fully blinded. In confined spaces like narrow hallways, the effects are harder to avoid.

Flashbangs also work through smoke. Do not assume you are safe just because your vision is obscured by a smoke grenade.

Avoiding Flashbangs

If you see a flashbang coming, quickly look away to minimize the blinding effect. This requires good reaction time and game sense. You can also use map cover like walls or obstacles to hide from the flash. In tight corridors, it can be nearly impossible to escape the effects completely.

A common mistake is peeking a corner right after throwing a flashbang. Experienced opponents often anticipate this and pre-fire the spot. Instead, throw the flashbang without peeking, then follow up only after it explodes.

Team Coordination

Flashbangs can blind teammates too, regardless of whether friendly fire is enabled. During site executes or retakes, well-timed flashbangs can blind multiple enemies at once, but be aware of your team's positions to avoid accidentally blinding them.
