CS2 practice server setup: the console commands for warmup, spray control, and grenade lineups, and the two CS:GO comman

Post by ice »

Quick summary

A private practice server is the fastest way to drill aim, spray control and grenade lineups in Counter-Strike 2. It needs two things: the developer console turned on, and a config file with the practice commands in it. Everything below runs on your own offline or private server only. None of it works in matchmaking, and none of it is a cheat.[10][11][12]

The one detail that trips people up is that two commands carried over from CS:GO guides no longer exist in CS2. If you paste an old config and nothing happens, that is usually why.[11]

Turn on the console first

The console is off by default. Open Settings, go to the Game tab, find "Enable Developer Console (~)" and set it to Yes. The tilde key, the one above Tab, opens it from then on.[12]

The base block

Start CS2, go to Play, then Practice, then Competitive, pick a map and click GO. Once the map loads, open the console and paste this single line.[10]

Code: Select all

bot_kick; mp_warmup_end; sv_cheats 1; mp_limitteams 0; mp_autoteambalance 0; mp_maxmoney 60000; mp_startmoney 60000; mp_buytime 9999; mp_buy_anywhere 1; mp_freezetime 0; mp_roundtime 60; mp_roundtime_defuse 60; mp_respawn_on_death_ct 1; mp_respawn_on_death_t 1; sv_infinite_ammo 1; sv_showimpacts 1; sv_showimpacts_time 10; ammo_grenade_limit_total 5; sv_grenade_trajectory_prac_pipreview 1; mp_restartgame 1;
You have to paste that every session. It is a lot to type twice a week, so the next section shows how to make it permanent.

Make it a config file

A config file is just a text file the game runs. Put it in the CS2 cfg folder, which sits inside your Steam install at Counter-Strike Global Offensive/game/csgo/cfg. Duplicate autoexec.cfg, clear it out, rename the copy to practice.cfg and paste the same commands in, one per line.[10]

Then you type exec practice once and the server is ready. If you want the commands to run every time CS2 starts, end the file with host_writeconfig instead.[11][12]

What each command does
  • sv_cheats 1 unlocks the rest. Without it, nothing below works.[11]
  • mp_freezetime 0 removes the wait at round start, so you can drill immediately.[10]
  • mp_warmup_end ends the warmup phase.[10]
  • mp_restartgame 1 restarts the round after one second, which resets between drills.[10]
  • sv_infinite_ammo 1 gives unlimited reserve ammo. Set it to 2 and you do not have to reload at all.[11]
  • mp_startmoney 60000 and mp_maxmoney 60000 remove the economy so you can buy anything to test.[10]
  • mp_buy_anywhere 1 and mp_buytime 9999 let you buy anywhere at any time.[10]
  • bot_kick clears bots so nothing wanders into your line of fire.[10]
  • mp_limitteams 0 and mp_autoteambalance 0 stop the game shuffling you around.[10]
  • sv_showimpacts 1 with sv_showimpacts_time 10 leaves bullet holes visible for ten seconds, which is what makes spray control practice readable.[10]
  • ammo_grenade_limit_total 5 lets you carry five grenades, so you can throw a lineup repeatedly without running back.[10]
  • mp_respawn_on_death_ct 1 and mp_respawn_on_death_t 1 bring you straight back after a death.[10]
Grenade lineups

These are the commands that make utility practice work. All of them need sv_cheats 1.[10][11]
  • sv_grenade_trajectory_prac_pipreview 1 shows a picture-in-picture preview of where the grenade lands while you are still holding it.[10][11]
  • sv_grenade_trajectory_prac_trailtime 10 keeps the flight trail on screen for ten seconds.[10][11]
  • cl_grenadepreview 1 draws a live trajectory line while you aim.[10][11]
  • sv_rethrow_last_grenade throws your last grenade again so you can walk to the landing spot and check it from there.[10][11]
  • noclip flies you through walls and terrain. Bind it to a key and you can hover over a smoke to see exactly where it blooms.[10][11]
Two commands that still circulate in older guides are gone. sv_grenade_trajectory and sv_grenade_trajectory_time were removed in CS2. The practice replacements are the two listed above, and if a config silently fails this is the first thing to check.[11]

Binds worth having

Code: Select all

bind "MOUSE5" "noclip"
bind "n" "sv_rethrow_last_grenade"
bind "j" "cl_removedecals"
The third one clears blood and bullet holes between throws so your lineups stay visible. The old CS:GO command for this was r_cleardecals, which no longer exists.[10]

Switching maps

Type map de_mirage or whatever map you want, then run exec practice again. Map changes do not reload your config automatically.[10]

What this will not do
  • These commands only work offline or on a private server where you have admin access. They are blocked in official matchmaking.[12]
  • Practicing on a private server does not teach you real round economy. The money commands exist so you can test loadouts, not so you can learn buys.[10]
  • Grenade lineups are map specific. A smoke that works on Mirage does not transfer to Inferno, and the trajectory preview only tells you where the throw lands, not whether it is useful.[11]
A sensible order for a session
  1. Deathmatch for ten to fifteen minutes so the guns feel normal.[15]
  2. Private server with infinite ammo, spray one rifle against a wall, and watch the impact markers.[10]
  3. Grenade lineups with the trajectory preview on, one map, one site at a time.[10]
  4. A short competitive match, then a demo review of what went wrong.[15]
Common mistakes
  • Pasting a CS:GO config and wondering why the trajectory line never appears. The commands were renamed.[11]
  • Trying these in matchmaking. They are not available there.[12]
  • Running exec practice before the map has finished loading. Wait for the load to complete.[10]
  • Expecting a private server to fix positioning. It fixes mechanics. Positioning comes from playing real rounds and reviewing them.[15]
