- Holding the reload key now reloads without the reload sound. Valve added the mechanic in the September 22, 2026 update.
- The cost is time. A silent reload takes longer than a normal one, so you are unable to fire for longer.
- Un-scoping a sniper weapon is silent now too, which landed in the same update.
- Valve patched two exploits and a reload bug in the weeks after release.
- The AUG reload time was cut by half a second on October 8, 2026.
Press the reload key and keep it held down. A normal reload plays its usual sound and finishes at the normal speed. Holding the key starts a reload that makes no sound at all, and it takes longer to finish. Valve's own announcement for the update puts it plainly: "Reloading can now be performed silently (by holding the reload key), but with a cost--silent reloads take quite a bit longer."
The mechanic shipped in the Rush Hour update on September 22, 2026, the same patch that introduced the Rush 3v3 mode and the new Premier veto process.
What you give up
The trade is the reload window. A silent reload leaves you unable to fire for longer than a normal reload, so you are trading readiness for concealment. Dust2's coverage of the update describes it as adding "trade-offs between a quick and loud reload and a longer but silent reload."
That makes the mechanic most useful when an enemy is close enough to hear a reload but not close enough to see you. If the sound would give away your position, holding the key is worth the longer wait.
The bugs Valve patched
- September 24, 2026: Valve fixed a case where tapping the reload button before holding it produced a slightly faster silent reload. The same patch fixed a case where silent reload could be used to fire shotguns faster than normal.
- September 25, 2026: Valve fixed cases where loud reloads would persist while trying to stealth reload.
- October 8, 2026: Valve fixed the sound event that played during a silent reload with the Desert Eagle.
Silent unscope
The same update removed the sound that played when you un-scoped a sniper weapon. Before September 22, letting go of a scope after holding an angle produced an audible cue. It does not now.
The AUG reload time
The October 8 patch reduced the AUG reload time by half a second. The October 14 patch updated the standing and crouch reload animations for the AUG to match the new reload duration. The AUG reloads faster now than it did when the mechanic arrived.
