CS2 private match: the ten-player pool, the practice lobby for bots, and how to pick the right route
Posted: Thu Oct 22, 2026 9:24 am
Quick summary
Private Matchmaking is the only route that puts the match on a Valve server with fixed sides.
The host sets up two separate parties of five. A matchmaking pool is not a ten-player party, so ten friends in one Steam group is not enough.
Route two: Practice on your own machine
Practice is for bots, small groups, one chosen official map, and local commands. It runs on the host's PC, so the session ends when the host leaves.
With Open Party enabled, friends can join through Join Game on the Steam friends list once the host has loaded the session. The other way to get people in is to send the matchmaking pool code in a DM or through the Steam overlay with Shift + Tab.
One detail worth knowing before you plan around it: a March 2025 guide reports that you can no longer set up a practice game from the Practice menu and have to go through Matchmaking instead. That is a menu change rather than a rule change, so treat the exact menu labels as the first thing to verify whenever a guide looks wrong.
Console commands worth knowing
Enable the developer console in the in-game settings first, then open it with the tilde key inside your private lobby.
Work down this list in order. It is the order the guide gives, and it matches what usually goes wrong.

Counter-Strike 2 update notes (Valve, official)
- CS2 has two private-play routes and they do different jobs. Private Matchmaking is a ten-player pool on a Valve server. Practice is a session hosted on your own PC.
- Private Matchmaking adds no bots, takes no exact map pick, and accepts no custom console settings.
- Practice can start with one player, picks an official map directly, and supports local console commands.
- The two routes are not interchangeable, so deciding which one you need comes before any settings work.
- If nobody can join, the usual causes are port forwarding and firewall rules, a stale pool code, a lobby that already filled with strangers, or a mode mismatch.

- Open Play, then Matchmaking, then Private Matchmaking.
- Choose Create a Private Matchmaking Pool.
- Copy the complete code exactly as displayed and send it privately. Anyone holding the code can search your pool.
- Every solo player or party leader enters that code and starts searching. Ten people sitting in voice chat is not enough, all ten must be actively searching through the same pool.
- When all ten eligible humans are allocated, everyone accepts, then the normal Premier-style map veto runs.

Console commands worth knowing
Enable the developer console in the in-game settings first, then open it with the tilde key inside your private lobby.
- bot_add t or bot_add ct adds a bot to the Terrorists or Counter-Terrorists.
- bot_difficulty 0 to 3 sets the difficulty. bot_snipers_only, bot_knives_only and bot_pistols_only restrict what they carry.
- mp_roundtime and mp_buytime set the round and buy time.
- mp_buy_anywhere 1 lets you buy anywhere on the map.
- sv_infinite_ammo 2 gives infinite ammo.
- mp_maxmoney 99999 and mp_startmoney 99999 start you loaded with cash.
- mp_warmup_end 1 skips the warmup.
- mp_restartgame 1 restarts the game and applies new settings without leaving the lobby.
Work down this list in order. It is the order the guide gives, and it matches what usually goes wrong.
- Port forwarding and firewall rules. Check these before anything else if your friends cannot connect.
- The map. Some built-in maps misbehave, and changing the location of the match fixes more than you would expect.
- The pool code. Double-check you sent the right one. A cached link or a truncated code fails silently.
- Access control. Check the lobby privacy setting, because the lobby may already be full of people you never invited.
- The in-game mode. Practice mode is not a Private Matchmaking option, so a mismatch here blocks the whole setup.
