CS2 game modes: what Casual, Deathmatch, Arms Race, and Retakes actually change, and what each one is for

Quick summary

Most players only ever touch Competitive and Premier, so the rest of the mode list sits there unread. This covers the four modes that are easy to skip: Casual, Deathmatch, Arms Race, and Retakes. Each one changes a different rule, and knowing which rule changed tells you how to play it.

The mode list

The wiki's Game Modes page lists two main matchmaking modes, Competitive and Premier, plus five extra modes: Wingman, Casual, Deathmatch, Arms Race, and Retakes. The wiki's Counter-Strike 2 article confirms the same five and adds that Wingman is a two-versus-two bomb defusal match on modified maps with one bombsite, ending after a team wins nine rounds.

Competitive and Premier are already covered elsewhere on this board, so the rest of this post is about the four modes nobody writes guides for.

CS2 also carries over only four of the online and offline modes from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Demolition and Danger Zone are gone, according to both wiki pages.

Casual

Casual is a ten versus ten bomb defusal or hostage rescue match played as a best-of-12 rounds, per the Game Modes page. Two things make it different from Competitive right away:
  • Players automatically receive body armor and defuse kits, so nobody starts a round unarmored.
  • Friendly fire and player collisions are disabled, and kill rewards are reduced by 50%.
You still buy weapons and gear each round with money earned from kills and objectives. The Counter-Strike 2 article describes the mode more loosely, as a bomb defusal mode with no ranking system and increased players per team. If you want to practise utility or a new rifle without spending your own economy, this is the mode for it.

Deathmatch

Deathmatch drops the objective entirely. There is instant respawning, and you can buy any primary and secondary weapon with no regard for the money economy. A match lasts 10 minutes and runs on all CS2 maps regardless of what that map was designed for. The team with the highest points at the end wins.

The Counter-Strike 2 article describes the same thing in fewer words: no map objective, with players trying to get the most kills before the match ends.

Arms Race

Arms Race is a gun progression mode with instant respawning and a lot of close quarter fighting. After registering two kills with each weapon, the next one is handed to you immediately as you work through the weapon list. The first player to get a kill with the final weapon, a golden knife, wins the match.

The Counter-Strike 2 article describes it as no money system with new weapons after successive kills and the match ending on a final knife kill. The two-kill-per-weapon detail comes from the Game Modes page.

Retakes

Retakes is a revised bomb defusal mode. Three Terrorists defend an active bombsite against four Counter-Terrorists, and the first team to win eight rounds takes the match. Both wiki pages state the same numbers.

It is the closest thing to a clutch practice mode in the list, because you start every round in a losing position with a bomb already down.

Which one to pick
  • Casual when you want to learn a map or a weapon without the economy pressure.
  • Deathmatch when you want raw aim reps and no downtime.
  • Arms Race when you want to touch every weapon in the game in one sitting.
  • Retakes when you want to practise playing from behind.
