CS2 on Steam Deck and Linux: the Playable rating, the systems Valve lists, and the fixes that help

Post by ice »

What the store page says

Counter-Strike 2 runs on Steam Deck, but Valve does not rate it Verified. The Steam store page lists the game under Steam Deck Compatibility as Playable, which is one of the four categories in Valve's Deck Verified program. Valve's own definitions: Verified means the game works great on Steam Deck by default with no additional modification, Playable means the game works but may require manual configuration from the user, which can mean adjusting controller configurations or using a mouse or touchscreen to navigate a launcher. Unsupported means the game is not considered playable, and Unknown means Valve has not tested it.

The systems Valve lists

The store page lists CS2 under Windows and under SteamOS + Linux. The Windows minimum is Windows 10, 4 hardware CPU threads (Intel Core i5 750 or higher), 8 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11 compatible video card with support for Shader Model 5.0, and 85 GB of available space. The Linux minimum is Ubuntu 20.04, the same 4 hardware CPU threads and 8 GB of RAM, and a graphics card from AMD GCN+ or NVIDIA Kepler+ with up to date Vulkan drivers. Valve also marks support for the VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library extension as highly recommended on Linux, along with a sound card.

Getting it running on a Deck

Valve's Steam Deck troubleshooting guide lists the steps to try first. Install system updates from Steam, then Settings, then System, then Software Updates, and restart the Deck. If you installed third party applications through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them and restart. For a Steam app that is unstable or slow, enable Proton: highlight the game in your Library, press the Menu button, and choose Properties, then Compatibility, then Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and pick the latest Proton. Valve notes that if only the Linux version of the game is installed, Steam may automatically download the Windows version in that case. The guide also suggests trying a lower graphics preset to reduce system load.

What the community reports

ProtonDB collects user reports for CS2 on Steam Deck and lists the game as Playable with 30 Steam Deck reports. The reports are mixed. One says installing the game to an SD card stopped it launching and it only ran from internal storage. Others describe heavy shader artifacts and invisible player models on the Deck, with desktop mode reducing them. A separate report describes audio cutting out after a while. These are individual user reports, not Valve's own testing, so treat each fix as a starting point rather than a guarantee.

What this means for you

CS2 is not Verified, so expect to spend a few minutes configuring it. Install updates first, keep the game on internal storage, and use the latest Proton. If you play on a Linux desktop instead of a Deck, the same compatibility layer applies.
