Quick summary

CS2 marks part of its console commands as cheat-protected. Those commands only run when sv_cheats is set to 1, and that only happens on a server you control. This post covers the commands people ask about most, what each one actually does, and why none of them work in matchmaking or on a secure server.

What sv_cheats is

sv_cheats is the server-side cvar that switches cheat commands on. The current build dump lists it with the description "Allow cheats on server". It is not a client setting, so you cannot flip it on a Valve matchmaking server, and you cannot flip it on somebody else's community server unless you run it.

One thing worth knowing before you go looking for it: the Valve snapshot page does not carry sv_cheats at all. That page is a fixed dump from October 2, 2023 (build 9832, revision 8384867), and Valve states on it that some commands may be removed or hidden by later updates. The build dump, which lists build 11162119 from October 22, 2026, is the better anchor for whether a command still exists today.

The cheat-flagged commands
  • noclip: "Toggle. Player becomes non-solid and flies. Optional argument of 0 or 1 to force enable/disable". Flags sv, cheat.
  • god: "Toggle by default, or 0 to disable and 1 to enable. Player becomes invulnerable." Flags sv, cheat.
  • host_timescale: "Prescale the clock by this amount." Default 1. Flags rep, cheat. host_timescale_inc and host_timescale_dec step it up and down one step at a time.
  • sv_infinite_ammo: "Player's active weapon will never run out of ammo". Listed in the build dump.
  • sv_gravity: "World gravity." Listed in the build dump.
  • thirdperson: "Switch to thirdperson camera." Flags cl, cheat, execute_per_tick.
  • firstperson: "Switch to firstperson camera." Flags cl, release, execute_per_tick. This one is not cheat-flagged, which is why it works anywhere.
  • impulse: "Triggers impulse command". Flags cl, release. Not cheat-flagged on its own, but the impulses it triggers often are.
Using them on a server you run

Set sv_cheats 1 in the console, then run the command. On a local practice server that is the whole process. On a community server you host, the same applies, but a secure server refuses cheat commands, which is a separate topic already covered on this board.

Why matchmaking ignores all of this

Matchmaking servers run with sv_cheats off, so the cheat-flagged half of the list is refused before it runs. That is why noclip and god work on your own server and do nothing in Competitive. The non-cheat entries, firstperson and impulse, are the ones you can still use in a real match.

FAQ
  • Can I enable noclip in matchmaking? No. sv_cheats is off on Valve servers, so the command is refused.
  • Why does god say it toggles? The description says "Toggle by default, or 0 to disable and 1 to enable", so typing it with no argument flips it, and typing god 0 turns it off.
  • Does host_timescale affect my own aim? It rescales the clock. What that does to your aim is a separate question from what the command is.
  • Is impulse a cheat command? No. It carries cl and release flags. The impulses it fires can still be blocked.
  • Are these commands in the Valve cvar list? Some are, some are not. The Valve page is a 2023 snapshot, so treat the build dump as the current word on what still exists.
  • Does sv_cheats appear on the Valve page? No. I grepped the saved page and it returns zero hits. The build dump is where it is listed.
