Steam Input gyro for CS2: the emulation path, the three gamepad templates, and the single player limit

Steam Input sits between your controller and the game. It translates input through one of three paths: Gamepad Emulation, Mouse and Keyboard Emulation, or the Steam Input API. This post covers the first path, because it is the one that can bind a gyroscope to mouse movement.

Everything below comes from Valve's Steam Input documentation. That page is written for developers, so it describes the platform rather than Counter-Strike 2 itself. The parts that matter to a player are the emulation path, the templates, and the two conditions.

Gyro to mouse emulation

Alongside normal gamepad input, Steam Input can bind the gyro on a Switch, PlayStation or Steam Controller to mouse emulation and provide motion controls. Valve's documentation states two conditions:
  • It only works in games with a single local player, because there is only one mouse input.
  • It also relies on the game accepting simultaneous mouse and gamepad input.
Both conditions matter for a Counter-Strike 2 player. The second one is the one to test, and Valve's page warns to test it on ancillary screens such as inventory or map screens, not just the main view. There is no Steam Input setting that removes the requirement.

How the emulation reaches the game

On Windows, the Steam Overlay hooks traditional gamepad input APIs such as XInput, DirectInput and RawInput, along with Windows.Gaming.Input, and injects an emulated Xbox controller device. On macOS and Linux, emulated controller input is provided by a driver.

The three gamepad templates

Steam Input ships three gamepad templates:
  • Gamepad. Emulates an Xbox controller with the right trackpad turned into a raw emulated joystick. Valve calls it the right fit for twin-stick, platformer and sports games.
  • Gamepad With High Precision Camera/Aim. Valve describes this as the ideal configuration for an FPS or any game using camera controls, with the warning to test simultaneous gamepad and mouse input first.
  • Gamepad with Camera Controls. Takes mouse style input from the trackpad and translates it into flicks of an emulated joystick. Valve says it can work well if the game supports very high joystick sensitivity, no deadzone and a linear acceleration curve, and to use a mouse and keyboard config instead otherwise.
Console controllers do not differentiate between the variants, but the settings are important for the Steam Controller.

Adoption figures Valve publishes

Valve's page states that roughly a quarter of all controller sessions on Steam in 2020 used Steam Input, including nearly half of all PlayStation controller sessions. It also states that over 2000 games on Steam use Gamepad Emulation for at least one controller type, naming Monster Hunter: World, Ace Combat 7, Dragon Quest XI, Into the Breach and Middle Earth: Shadow of War.
